This thread is not meant for criticism, many know how I leik the 'Screamo' but this song has none what so ever.(other of their songs do)

Basically, I borrowed In Flames newest album from my friend and I listened to this song and looked up the lyrics cause it got me wondering. The lyrics themselves in this song could have many meanings but I want to know what you think they mean, and please listen to the song, it may be long and somewhat boring on the first listen, but it is extremely meaningful in my opinion.
Lyrics:
Spoiler:
Tell me which side I'm on,
Approaching constant failure.

Tell me which side I'm on,
Who's friend or foe?
Approaching constant failure.

Between love and hate,
Which path to follow?
How can I keep balance in this race?
Come faith, I'm dying... slowly.

In many ways I'm the burden,
That divides us from the light,
In many ways you're the halo,
That keeps my spirit alive.

Temptation, play the good or evil part,
With me you evoke the dark... away.

Erase the free will watch me heal.

Tell me which side I'm on,
Approaching constant failure.

Between love and hate,
Which path to follow?
How can I keep balance in this race?
Come faith, I'm dying.

Bemused by trials and tribulations
If I survive I fly from here
But as the chosen pessimist,
I carve my name in stone,
I carve my name in stone.

Bemused by trials and tribulations
If I survive I fly from here
But as the chosen pessimist,
How can I keep balance in this race?
Come faith, I'm dying.

I think that it may represent the choises that you make, bad or good. And how some people make you understand what is good and what is bad, how some people save you from the darkness but leave you in wonder do I diserve it? And why I forgive the ones that broke me and pushed me in the Darkness? 'Come faith I'm dying...'

I know, I sound extremely err, emo saying that, but it was meant to be pussy-ish lol.

So what do you think?

Shit, you can do this with tons of songs by anyone. Including Mastodon. Hell, just look at the Crack the Skye album. And even more than that, their second album, Remission, had some pretty deep stuff. Like these:

Trilobite
Spoiler:
if you can't get it
i can't get it
fly
soul is single
wind beneath us
i can't take it
if you can't take it
fly
soul is single
wind beneath us

shades of sixteen
you're with me
shades of sixteen
remember

This one is really kind of obvious I guess, but it's basically a heavy metal song about being with someone you love. The way t's delivered, though, the song itself is just powerful.

"Where strides the Behemoth"
Spoiler:
condition tomorrow
with visions inlaid
the priest stands to our right
a princess is mine

the regress of some minds
further chase the prize
pretentious you follow
religion is mine

anger precedes my footsteps
haunting past comes into head
horizon seems so far away
this life close to end of days
kill and i will be damned
forgive and i will be free

unified eyesight
grow

This one's about domestic abuse, Stockholm syndrome where the victim stays with her abuser anyway "pretentious [she] follows". The last two lines are especially great.

'Mother Puncher"
Spoiler:
change stand grow
these things you'll never be
taste your fate
all that you'll ever be
a life love unconditional
a life love
love unconditional

chase
chase 'em down string 'em up
hate
hate the ones who bring you down

Hatred of negligent/abusive parents and the eventual backlash, so to speak.

The best part about Mastodon is that the lyrics to nearly any song can be interpreted however the listener feels is correct, what applies to them. It makes it such a more involving experience. So you don't have to agree with what I think of them as. And a lot of the time, it's all accomplished ith just a few phrases and some heavy guitar. That is something. A lot of other bands have deep meanings/messages; Metallica and Motorhead in particular have some interesting messages. Metallica's mostly being in the earlier work (especially the Master of Puppets album) and Motorhead having some neat little gems like this one about athiesm:

'Keys to the Kingdom"
Spoiler:
Death in the stars, rain on the wind,
Came to the mission, couldn't get in,
Came out of nowhere, guess I'll go back,
All down to bad luck,
Fire in the sky, nowhere to run,
Came to the desert, burned by the sun,
Came out of somewhere, I ain't never been back,
All down to bad luck,
King of frustration, Vampire de Luxe,
Keys To The Kingdom, God hates your guts,
Out of the heavens a blessing might fall,
But the Keys To The Kingdom mean nothing at all,

Crippled by cold, blinded by fear,
Looking for God, but they said he ain't here,
Came out of nowhere, can't stand to go back,
All down to bad luck,
Carved on a stone, the world's epitaph,
Walked through te graveyard, just had to laugh,
Came out of exile, for a handful of dust,
All down to bad luck,

King aggrivation, Vampire de Luxe,
Congratulations, God hates your guts,
Bound for damnation, backs to the wall,
And the Keys To The Kingdom mean nothing at all,

High in the sky, in letters of fire,
The names of the saints, the thieves and the liars,
Came to the funeral, out of pure spite,
All down to bad luck,
The least we could do, the harder we tried,
The better we lived, the sooner we died,
Came to the goldmine, cold and alone,
All down to bad luck,

King of starvation, Vampire de Luxe,
Keys To The Kingdom, we hate your guts,
In the asylum, no one hears you call,
And the Keys To The Kingdom are nothing at all,
Nothing at all

Didn't mean to hijack your thread or try and put you down or anything, but I've listened to and thought about these a lot more than I've thought about In Flames and I don't get many opportunities to dscuss them.

Ya, I know. Mastodon's Crack the Skye is possibly my favorite album of almost ever besides Pink Floyd's The Wall and KsE's Daylight Dies. I'm just saying this song more than any other song i've ever heard has made me think alot recently. And be my guest at sparking conversation Lenin.

Still wanna know what ya think of it though ;)
